Finding Ethos

My name is Brent Totty, and I am one of the co-founders of Ethos Research. Human potential has been near and dear to my heart for many years, with a particular emphasis on the connection between the brain and how it shapes our interpretation of the world.

I have suffered from generalized anxiety disorder since my early teens -- and I’ll be upfront with you, I haven’t fully tamed the beast. Anxiety is something that affects over 40 million Americans, and that number is growing every day. As I grew up, the pressure of life drastically increased -- from college applications to entering the workforce. When I hit my 20s, I realized that I had to do something about it.  I started deeply researching how to change my perception of the world around me to upgrade my daily performance and wellbeing.

I’ll be the first to say, the foundation of human performance lies within what we put into our bodies. It starts with food and progresses towards supplementing what we cannot get from our diet. We are a walking, talking chemical mixture that is continuously changing and shifting based upon the inputs that our external environments throw at us. The things that we put into our bodies have the power to help us react to the unexpected in ways that we want; however, they also have the power to shift the tide towards less than optimal reactions. This is the concept of building up a robust internal environment -- to fortify our minds to interpret the world around us in positive ways.

Through my journey of Tim Ferris-esque self-experimentation, I stumbled upon a few different compounds that I found to have a drastic effect on my personal chemical makeup. I built a cocktail of anti-anxiety productivity supplements that helped me focus and not heavily rely on caffeine so that I could perform at work without added stress and continue to build my personal skills in group settings. I had to mix and match a bunch of different supplements from a multitude of different brands to get my desired effect, and realized that there had to be a better way. I didn’t do anything about it right away, but when I met my good friend and co-founder of Ethos, Austin Lockard -- something clicked. He had already been working on a blend of science-backed ingredients to help with focus and productivity.  Lo and behold, most of my go-to ingredients were already being considered for the initial product, Ethos WORK.

Ethos is representative of my daily mission -- to empower individuals of impact to do great things. As an entrepreneur with a focus on shaping the wellness of the world, I can say that what we are working on transcends the standard trajectory of a supplement company. We happen to be starting with supplements because that is a foot in the door to opening the world of human potential.

We all have the power within us to be great and to make the impact that we want in this world, and it’s our mission to create products and environments -- supplements, technology, and community -- to enable those with a vision for a brighter future to achieve their goals.
